Put in day. Rangers to deal with. Last minute things like the people we rented the shitters from didn’t supply toilet paper as ordered.
The quest for toilet paper turned out to be a fortuitous one… Cafe/General Store/Exxon Station… Two rolls of the double ply we need. Next stop is the motel up the road (Lee’s Ferry Lodge and Restaurant) to see if they will sell some since they buy in bulk, and we are bulk — 12 rolls of 400 double-ply.
So, the most amazing thing happened — some guy came up to the van at the lodge and said “who’s here from Olympia?”
Turns out it was Greg Falxa who I knew from Olympia (and bought a car from). Haven’t seen him in 20 years, but keep track of him through Former Councilman Curt and his (Greg’s) bat tracking projects in Oly. Turns out he is finally finishing his BA after 25 years — down here on a bat internship!
Follow that with finally dealing with shuttle vehicles and safety lectures and finally launching for and hour of floating before we need lunch.
Great lunch of sandwiches before we head under the Navajo Bridge (the one I peed off of last night) and on down the river before hitting the badger rapids and immediately back paddling to get into a camping area.
The other 21 day trip that started just after us (who did the cathedral hike/lunch) passed as we were setting up.
Dinner was a beef stew, carrots, sauteed apples — and I didn’t have to clean up, just prep.
Off to set up camp and drink.
