10-1 — Layover Day.

Layover day today — just add cookies after breakfast and launch into the day the same time the rains roll in. The mass (2/3rds) are hiking a quarter mile (straight up almost). Several of us are staying in camp to veg, shower, read, work on boats)..

Hypothermia comes on quick. Put on additional layers of clothing and huddled under the Leslie constructed rain fly (engineered and functional) before getting colder and retreating to the tent — which was cramped and dry, but easy to warm up — didn’t even get in the bag.

My morning started at 5am with sprinkles. For some reason I already had the tent out of the dry bag — and the rain fly was on top. Thought that would do it until a crack of lightning an hour later. Time to get the whole damn tent up. The nice time is that I don’t have to bring my bags in — they’re waterproof.

Big rains noonish when I fled to the mini-tent. Had a whack and a nap — falling asleep to the sound of rain and dreams of the Cult of Bacchus (CB) with all the acolytes (CBA).

I realized late in the afternoon that the silk underwear (long) that I have on the trip (and added as the lower bottom layer) is from my Evergreen trip to Europe the summer of ’79 for school called the “The Ancient History of Rome and Greece.” That trip was a 6 week version of the trip — just replace the Chrysler Simca with rubber boats — the occasional layover day with it usually being packed up and down the road/river every day.

Tonight is ratatouille by Jaime and Paula. Tomorrow it’s back to the river with several boat modifications (patch for Sarah, foot holds for Chris’ second boat).

In case you haven’t noticed — the trip is exceeding my usual boundaries of comfort (and I think at least Uli’s as well.
