Is It “EBaying My Life Away”

or “Police State In America”.

The topic of today’s blog was supposed to be the joy of selling off my life on EBay to support my bad habits of not really wanting a 40+ hour a week job… but as I was preparing material tonight, this came up:

Border Patrol “spot checks” on ferries provoke outrage in San Juan Islands

FRIDAY HARBOR, San Juan County — The people of the San Juan Islands tend to be independent sorts, espousing a do-it-yourself, leave-me-be ethos as natural and ever-present as the tide.

But for many of the 17,000 people of this island county, the normal rhythms of small-town life have hit a dissonant chord lately.

A couple of months ago, the U.S. Border Patrol began occasional “spot checks” of every vehicle and passenger arriving in Anacortes off state ferries, the lifeline between these islands and the mainland.

For some here, it seems like a good idea or, at worst, a minor inconvenience. But for a vocal and active faction, the federal agents’ aggressive questioning and demands for identification have spurred outrage.

So much for the San Juans as a place to “get away from it all”, it seems we are now on the front line on the “war caused by non-existence weapons of mass distraction”. No wonder the phrase “police state” was used in the article.

Sort of sours my making a couple of hundred (taxable) dollars in the EBay trade today. Even sours have a fine evening of drinking vodka and eating caviar (apparently the basis of the police state) at Morton’s Steak House — best $45 somebody else has spent on me — two hours of all the Russian Vodka (Imperial) martinis you could drink, a couple of tenderloins sliced at will, salmon sliced on slivers of bread, caviar and sour cream on spoons, toast points with more caviar, cucumber slices piled high with ahi tuna chunks. Life would be good if it weren’t for the gestapo. How soon before the brown shirts are marching in the street (OK — I’m not talking about your local UPS driver — as in “What Can Brown Do To You”.

Humor and Angst. Be sure to send me letters when Home Land UnSecurity arrests me.

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s very hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appeal. I must say you have done a awesome job with this. Also, the blog loads super quick for me on Firefox. Excellent Blog!
