Train Day Three.

Managed to get to breakfast around 7:30 this morning. The Retired Ship Captain that I was seated with last night was just arriving as I was finishing my spinach/mushroom/cheese frittata with pork sausage on the side. I ignored the potatoes, but did have a glass of cranberry juice. I explained that I wasn’t very chatty in the morning… and that maybe we could (and did) share a table later.

After last night I was now out of mixers for the bourbon that I brought along… so with lunch I got a complimentary Diet Pepsi (one per meal) as did I with dinner – along with grabbing a couple of small cans from the Metropolitan Lounge when we stopped in Portland for an hour. This means I will have avoided buying any of their bar soda pop at $2.50 a pop.

A little different scenery today as we are now in the mountains – yesterday morning was all sun and beaches, today is all overcast and snow:

Here is my car attendant Brian:

He was the nice main that made sure I never ran out of ice.

Speaking of Portland, here is a quick shot of the station. If you see the red cone, that is the entrance to the Metropolitan Lunge which is only for sleeping car passengers (others are in Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, New York) – the source of free Diet Pepsi:

The train you see is the cancelled Empire Builder run for today (and until Sunday apparently). Seems North Plains storms have severely affected service between St. Paul and Spokane. Full Story Here

And those long-time readers may have seen my posts about Amtrak’s Braised Lamb Shanks… well, here they are in the flesh – so tender that the Capt. Ret. only needed to use his fork to finish them off:

Got into Seattle almost an hour early – or at least it felt that way – bodes well for next week’s Coast Starlight Trip to Los Angeles with Dwight – he’s headed to see his mom – me, I’m just tagging along to LA, spending the night, then flying home.

Looking forward to my own bed tonight.

[? ? ?] Always worried what tomorrow’s number will be after a week on the road, especially with three days of three square meals a day.

Train Day Two.

I love how Amtrak pads their schedules for the last stop of their long distance trains… Fullerton to Los Angeles they said it would take from 6:34am from Fullerton to arriving in Los Angeles at 8:15am. Round numbers an hour and a half… what their schedule shows for the outbound times…. 6:15pm LA, 6:50pm Fullerton – so the real time is half an hour. Means that while technically “running late” this morning we arrived on time. The same is true in/out of Seattle. Schedule time inbound = hour and a half, outbound time = forty five minutes.

The Metropolitan Lounge in the Los Angeles Amtrak station, which had just opened when I was through last December, has been upgraded further:

They should put these chairs in the airport lounges. Each chair has two outlets on the side (that black box) and the table and drink holder pivot. Seriously cool… not sure if I have room for them in the living room though. And big FLAT arms to set more crap.

The trip north out of Los Angeles is one of the most stunning chunks of rail line in the US – there are rumors about moving the Coast Starlight inland (which would cut time out – not like they are planning for the chunk around Point Defiance in Tacoma). The dining car and the view:

Luckily I’m on the ocean-side of the train so whatever water view there is, I get it. Unfortunately in the mountains of Southern Oregon it means that you are on the mountain side rather than the valley view.

Grilled chicken Caesar in the Parlour Car for lunch. When you eat in the Parlour Car you eat with however many are in your party… be it one or four – no forced communal seating. Downside: limited menu which usually doesn’t thrill me. Upside: being about to read in piece. Downside: you don’t to get met random interesting people. Upside: you miss the crazy ones.

Wine tasting in the afternoon (with trivia contest). Two California whites, two California reds – tomorrow it will be Washington/Oregon wines… included free with your sleeping accommodation (as are all meals). And there are several cheese varieties to try as well. Very civilized. I like the cheddar with lavender in it. The smoked was good as well. Ah, life.

Dinner was the Ancho Short (in theory a Tom Douglas recipe) ribs with mashed potatoes – and half a bottle of the Paso Creek 2012 Zinfandel from Paso Robles – the other half will die tomorrow with dinner.

But the joy of the evening was on our short layover in Emeryville: a visit from the boys, Mark and Onyx who I was witness to their ceremony last week.

Thanks to my Car Attendant/Cabin Boy/Porter – not sure what the phrase is for taking the great picture. I have long envisioned a book entitled, “Station Hugs” where the theme is friends meeting at the train station for quick hugs while passing through.

Another late night – rocked to sleep by the train.

Taking The Train To The Train.

Time for the slow return to Seattle. Cab to the RailRunner, RailRunner to Albuquerque, Southwest Chief to Los Angeles, Coast Starlight to Seattle.

A little time with Mom, then on the road at noon even though the RailRunner doesn’t leave until 1… Mr. Early as usual.

The RailRunner:

My “office” on the RailRunner:

A selfie (love the blurry background):

A little after two thirty got to Albuquerque to meet the Southwest Chief that leaves at 4:40 – and Michelle (my sis-in-law’s law school buddy with whom I’ve shared a few antics over the years) is back from Columbia and comes to hang with me at the train station – and a treat as well since the train arrives early so we don’t have to hang out in the Amtrak/Greyhound station but can hang out in Room 4 of Car 0411:

It was great to hang out with her for an hour (even though she parked in the 30 minute zone).

Once Michelle is gone, it’s time to set up my Southwest Chief “Office”:

And bar. Unfortunately on the Southwest Chief you don’t get free domestic champagne (or Martinellis if you don’t drink alcohol), nor an amenity kit:

While I was still in cell range I did something I should have done days (if not months) ago – upped my cellphone plan to turn my phone into a wi-fi cellular hotspot. $10 a month extra but more than twice the amount of data (and then when you exceed that they just throttle back your connection). Woohoo – I’m in love with the internet again. Why didn’t I do this when I was at Moms where there is a strong 4G signal!

Had the steak for dinner – medium rare, which of course came out medium which is about the best you can ask for when the damn thing is only ½” thick. Got my dessert to go – cheesecake with strawberries – means a few more trinkets for Dwight for his XMess present next week (Amtrak bowl and spoon).

Got to bed late (as is becoming the norm – 5am wakeup call, and George (my car attendant) is going to bring me my breakfast at 5:30 since the kitchen closes at 6 as we arrive in LA at 8:15am.

[? ? ?] And who knows with the mashed potatoes I had with the steak.

Full Day In Santa Fe.

Slept in this morning – a reward for getting little sleep on Sunday night – or maybe I just felt like it.

Took care of a few things for mom around the house…

  • Fixed a shelf in the medicine cabinet
  • Rearranged the furniture in the guest room so that there was easy access to both sides of the bed
  • Got the giant scooter box out of the living room
  • Redid some wiring so that cords weren’t tripping hazards
  • Cleaned some things out of the storage locker

Then it was off Christmas shopping… yes, I’m shopping for presents for myself with mom along to pick up the bill. Two stops for that:

A little stop at Kaunes (the local upscale market) for wine for dinner and soda for mom and I then back to El Castillo (jokingly, the old folks home.

Next was to get the Eddie Bauer tree up that arrived via UPS:

Brother-in-law Kennan arrived minus Sister-in-law (home with my sick niece) and off to the dining room we went, bottle of wine in hand.

Just a side comment at this point. My mother is still on dial-up. Remember those days? Painfully slow – last night I call the gay boys (well, they are in a retirement home so guess they are no longer boys) to see if I could piggyback off their wi-fi signal… albeit at one to two bars. Better than painfully slow but forget streaming video. I need to remember to send them a bottle of the Spanish vermouth – seems finding interesting Vermouth in Santa Fe is not easy.

And now back to our regularly scheduled blot post.

It’s a year to the day that Dad died. I hadn’t even thought about it when I made the plane/train reservations – it was just an open week in December to see family. I’m staying in what was my father’s bedroom, officially now the guest bedroom. On the top of his dresser are a bunch of old pictures, a couple of his award plaques, temp and humidity gauges that had never been hung, and this wicker elephant from our trip to India in 1976. My father insisted on moving the elephant when they relocated to El Castillo saying, “I hauled that damn thing all over India, I’m not going to abandon it now.” Apparently the elephant had been purchase EARLY in the three weeks that my parents were there (I stayed a month and a half).

The before shot:

Not sure how the topic came up when Mom and I were chatting about it being one year to the day since Dad died, but it turns out my father’s ashes were sitting on a box on the lower dresser – nobody had ever picked an urn or expressed any interest in taking a portion (or all of the ashes).

He now has “an urn”.

I’d never actually seen “cremains” before – it’s like a sack of dark sand. At least he has a home now.

The after shot – more like a memorial altar. Hopefully it won’t freak Mom out.

Plaques hung, weather instruments hung, photos arranged. A few tears were shed creating this memorial.

And that’s enough for today.

Transit Day.

Apparently I don’t learn that dinner parties the night before travelling yield hangovers.

That said, it was a great night. I love cooking, I love plying boys with fresh baked bread…

But this is what I look like in the morning in the airport:

The secret to sleeping on a plane – no sleep the night before. Slept like a lamb.

Quarter Pounder with Cheese in the airport before the next flight (which I slept through) to Santa Fe.

Sis-in-law met me at the airport and suffered through the – I swear – they bring the bags one at a time from the plane to the baggage carousel – hell, it’s a roller track. And slow.

Got to El Castillo (The Castle) to hang with Mom for a couple of days.

Chat for a while and then it’s off to shopping:

  • Cheap booze to take back to Washington State (several 1.75 litters of Evan Williams), Trader Joes and Albertsons
  • Leopard print Santa Hat to replace the one I forgot in Seattle (Albertsons, not as nice as the one I left behind)

Then off to pick up dinner at the Whole Hog – went for the “Whole Hog Platter” which is:

  • pulled pork,
  • beef brisket,
  • three baby back ribs
  • beans (tasty),
  • potato salad,
  • slaw,
  • roll

Mom turned her nose up at the roll, but it was one of those dinner butter things that I scarfed down even on my low carb diet. There was enough food for the both of us, and snacks for tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I’ve got blogging to do, and I made a deal with the gay couple across the courtyard from mom’s to piggyback (not bareback) on their wi-fi – granted it’s 1-2 bars but it beats trying to do stuff on mom’s dial-up (no, not kidding) connection. Looking into fixing that.

Speaking of fixing, things to fix, or just things to organize:

  • Dishwasher – apartment size, bad to start with, bad install, cleaned lots of filters
  • Extension cords going everywhere (tomorrow)
  • Deal with the storage room (tomorrow)

Other chores:

  • Pimp spare bedroom (where I stay)

Up too late (again).

More Bread, More People.

Sometimes then you work all day, then run home to start baking bread, all you want to do is show a pretty boy in a fur coat:

Man, that fur coat has gotten more action than me.

Roxy brought him over – he is on a long layover headed to New Zealand for a year on a work/study visa. Damn, I wish I was a sheep. That’s a joke about New Zealand.

The worst part of this evening is that:

  1. I have to pack to visit mom and the relatives (packing is the big concern)
  2. The alarm is set for 3am to leave for the airport at 4am for a 6:30 am flight.

We will call this photo “Otter Seaks Otter”.

Holiday Shop Duty.

Up into the early AM and then to the shop for the Annual Bubbles Tasting, which is always filled with people – especially at the beginning because they know we can barely stretch the bottles until 4pm.

Closed the shop at 7pm and went home to have a wonderful piece of cow (that I’d been missing in MaCow – sorry, bad pun).

I actually deglazed the pan with a little red wine, reduced it, stirred in some flour… crap, that’s gravy! (Albeit dense).

Organizing and packing Christmas stuff to go to Santa Fe… but checking FaceBook and my friend Missy isn’t feeling too good – can’t understand why chemo doesn’t make you feel good. Said she wasn’t eating much and I know she likes my Rosemary Challah (that would be an egg bread).

So, another long night – when you start baking bread at 11pm:

Delivered the loaf at 1am to a very smiling Missy.

Love you.

Hello San Francisco.

Yes, both this and the next post are tagged Friday… that tricky International Date Line.

Guess the day started when I woke up from my Ambien/Bourbon nap in time for the third and final meal service of the day. Slept through the 2nd service, though I found some in the galley.

So, what amused me (apparently I’m amusing myself a lot this trip) was during the flight I realized that I have a massive layover in San Francisco – which I remember thinking about when I booked the trip months ago that it would be a great excuse to take BART to Berkeley and hang with the boys.

Arrived and texted them with a lunch date request – sure – they were planning on going to the courthouse to get their marriage license for getting hitched sometime within the next 90 days.

Synchronicity Number 1.

Here is Lunetta filling out the application:

Where the choices were:

  • Groom
  • Bride
  • Neither

Both chose Neither… guess that makes them Mr. & Mr. Neither.

Here are the boys listening for the fourth time how to NOT screw up filling out the witness and preacher section:

The boys on the courthouse steps after getting their license to legally wed in the state of California:

And then we started thinking about lunch – that little omelet on the plane was long gone and was starting to get that blood sugar thing goin’. It was decided, GREEK! But a glint showed up in Lunetta’s eyes… “Wonder if Fang (the officiate) is available this afternoon.” Turns out Fang had cancelled an afternoon meeting… and was free.

Synchronicity Number 2.

One more in the car headed to the Greek Restaurant – Troy, in Berkeley. Table for four upstairs, please…. The wedding was on in all its spontaneous glory.

What started out as going for a license turned into the whole ball of wax… five hours start to finish.

The Bachelor Party – appetizers with a nice Italian Pinot Grigio – which when it arrived at the table I read the back label and this quote was on it:

Bivio: [Italian] N. : A fork in the road.
Bivio Italia celebrates the joy of exploring life’s many forks in the road with spontaneity and style.

Synchronicity Number 3.

The ceremony. We needed a piece of cake and three candles. The dessert menu had two items – baklava (hard to put a candle in) and TUXEDO Cake.

Synchronicity Number 4.

And for the 1:01 minute ceremony (my favorite is the Akbar and Jeff moment):

The ceremony was something like, “Do you promise to do what you’ve been doing over the past 16 years and stop doing it when it no longer works?”

And for those of you not familiar with Akbar and Jeff, here is a little illustration by Matt Groening of Simpson’s fame:

With the ceremony over, it’s time for the wedding banquet – and all four of order the same item: The Gyros Platter which has beef and lamb gyros, tzatziki, grilled vegetable and horitiaki salad.

Synchronicity Number 5.

After it’s all over, we drop Fang off, and I pick up from the free box a lovely red saloon girl outfit, sorry, no photos. Wish I’d had that at the wedding – I could have been the “flower girl” in addition to the “wurst man”, “made of honour”, “cock ring bearer” – whoops, weren’t any of those.

As the boys said – the two of us are the ones that they’ve know the longest and really wanted us to be the ones in an intimate ceremony.

Mission accomplished – even if it wasn’t planned at the time.

The boys dropped me off at the house for a nap (turned out to be 2.5 hours) while they went back to the courthouse to get the official stamps. Done and done.

Onyx was a jewel and took me to the airport – I felt bad looking at the traffic for his return commute.

As for me – half a dozen oysters on the half shell, a cup of chowder, a little bourbon, a little shopping the discount rack at the book store… and onto the plan am I – upgraded to Seat 1E, bulkhead aisle on United. I loves my Bulkhead Aisle – nobody putting their seat down into your space and you can brace against the bulkhead wall on impact.

And for our last moment of Synchronicity… so, June Cleaver (I kid you not, that’s what her apron said, though I’m guessing it’s not true) is serving me drinks while I’m watching old reruns on the television system. Here is June:

So, there I am watching an old episode of Parks and Recreation, a sitcom about a Midwestern (Indiana, I believe) Parks and Recreation Department. A humorous sitcom about bureaucracy. What happens in this episode? Amy Poehler’s characters boss grabs the woman he’s been seeing, goes upstairs (it is a county office building after all), gets the license, has the judge do the ceremony – though theirs was more like 5 minutes.

Synchronicity Number 6.

I’m done for the night. Got in at 1am to Seattle, was up until 3am, and had to be at work at 1:30 the next afternoon.

Bye, Bye, Macau.

6AM wake-up call – which actually happened. You never know with the language issues. They even served me my “American Breakfast” before 7am which is the official start. Since room service is 24 hours a day, it wouldn’t seem like a big deal.

Then there was getting a cab to the Ferry Terminal… more language difficulties – which ended up basically go down to the street and flag one down. Success in under 5 minutes. More lessons learned.

I should really have done a little more research on the High-Speed Ferry to the airport… I’d heard it ran every 30-45 minutes… well, that turns out to be the ferry to the mainland – 2 hours is the one to the airport. Ouch – and I missed the cut-off for the 7:30 by like half an hour. Had I known I would have skipped breakfast. Luckily flight isn’t until 12:30pm so there will be plenty of time, but it does cut down my time in the lounge with its really good wi-fi connection.

Upstairs in the Ferry Terminal next to the McDonalds I did fine a decent signal – enough to finally get those BlueTooth drivers downloaded and installed.

And my work space:

MAN I really wanted a chair to sit on, but they were all chained off. And what a GREAT idea for public places – a charging station with all sorts of cables:

Well – the ferry is here to take me to the airport…

And funny thing number one… so I get to the airport and check in – they hand me a refund receipt for $120HKG ($13-15USD) which I take to a counter just before security and they pay me in cash. Why? A refund for some Hong Kong Airport tax that doesn’t apply to people coming in from Macau? Clueless – I used the money to buy a carton of cheap Chinese cigarettes. OF course the downside is that I have like $90MCO (Macau dollars, about $11USD) and $500-600HKG (like $75USD) – guess I have to come back.

The down side of the delay is only an hour in the United Club in Hong Kong WHICH IS STUNNING for the array of free food and booze they have not to mention all those newspaper, which to a news junkie is nirvana. Last time I was through (September?) they had a Hot Dog Stand set up. This time is was a freakin’ Taco Stand set up:

Four drinks, two messy tacos, a couple of helpings of the chicken in a cream sauce, a spring roll – passed on the vegie sushi rolls, fried rice, sautéed vegetables – but did grab a couple of sandwiches for the plane along with six different newspapers.

All is good.

Flights are on time.

My Full Day In Macau.

Well, lots of oddities in Macau…

  1. Multiple breakfast coupons so when I was jet-lagged from not taking the Ambien (bad idea) I went to the 4th floor for the Chinese Buffet breakfast… most amusing was the salad with the thousand island dressing on the “buffet”… that’s in quotes because it was tiny compared to most Asian breakfast buffets
  2. And at 10AM the “American Breakfast” in the café in the lobby. 2 eggs up, croissant, sausage

When you are awake at 5am you might as well get your first two meals on the house.

My one big goal today is to see the Formula One Museum, which appears to be walkable… though it takes me several times around the block to spot the entrance. And oddly enough because of some “Made in Macau” show, the entrance is free. My ex Jeff would love this place – lots of old Formula One cars on display:

Then it was next door (I say that when actually both of these places are located in the basement of a building) to the Wine Museum which should really be called “The Portuguese Influence on the Wine Trade Museum”:

Here is the cute guy of Portuguese decent pouring samples of Portuguese wine:

And then back to the hotel for a bit before my next meal which had the following requirements:

  • A menu with some English on it (harder than you might think)
  • Free wi-fi

Wondering around Macau has been amusing… wandered through the Wynn – seemingly the only white person in the place, then past a McDonalds (but no wi-fi icon, sigh) where I spotted two white people, then found a lovely place at a good price for a “set” lunch menu… the Australian Kobe beef is red-wine sauce with rice, soup and ice tea. Much better wi-fi connection than the hotel lobby, which seems to be dial-up speed shared between a hundred people downloading YouTube videos.

Through the last couple of days I’ve been suffering from BlueTooth woes… can’t find the keyboard, or the mouse, or both… dropping connection, needs to reboot.

Back at the hotel I tried unsuccessfully to download a new driver… the connection kept timing out. Thought about going back to the same restaurant for dinner but instead had a sausage with some interesting sauce from the 7-Eleven around the corner – I’d gone in for Coke Light (their version of Diet Coke, as in Mexico as well). From that little walkabout:

The one amazing this was actually getting a BUCKET of ice tonight, apparently I’d broken through the language barrier. Of course the guy I got on the phone wasn’t sure if there would be a charge, if so he’d call back. Apparently $20HKD is the answer. And apparently this might have been the first time someone asked for ice – but it came in a regular white wine ice bucket and everything.

Finally – Bourbon and Diet on the rocks. Too bad the bucket didn’t fit completely into the fridge.

To bed a little earlier tonight – should have taken the Ambien on the airplane, sleeps been kinda rocky. Early morning tomorrow.

Long Overnight In The Air.

Got to Hong Kong in one piece, though I screwed up and didn’t realize that the ferry to Macau was in the SECURE portion of the airport – that added an hour to my trip as I had to take the airport express in to Hong Kong and then catch the ferry from the Mainland… will know better next time.

Here is the craziness to the ferry ride:

Luckily I’d bought a Coke Zero and the airport to break an HKG100 bill – and there was duty-free whiskey in my bag… and I’m pretty good at pouring whiskey into Coke cans.

Add Portuguese to the sign languages…

And the view from my room (1201)…

The Sands is to my right, the above is the Star World Casino, the MGM is a couple of blocks away, as is the Wynn Macau. Hello Asia Vegas!

Almost forgot the room itself:

Not too shabby for $110 a night (or something like that – includes breakfast). No wi-fi, but at least there are a couple of western plugs as I forgot my adapter).

Now about the ice situation – called down to get a bucket of ice… got a knock on the door with a GLASS of ice. A little problem with the language barrier as I seem to be the only white person in sight.

Guess I’ll add that to tomorrow shopping list.

Long Day In The Air.

9:30am flight so it isn’t too bad – but not using the United lounge even though I can as a Premier Gold on an international trip – the food just isn’t as good.

Did get a view of my favorite Alaska Airlines paint jobs when I was in the Board Room for breakfast:

And getting ready to board the 13.5 hour flight from SFO to HKG…

And look… French wine in a plastic bottle. Good thing it’s free:

Didn’t take my usual Ambien this time as an experiment, will report the details tomorrow.

Hella Busy Monday.

Trying to get ready for tomorrow’s trip to Hong Kong and Macau… no time for the champagne tasting this afternoon, especially getting stuck in Seahawks traffic – compounded by a City of Seattle de-icer accident causing the West Seattle Freeway to shut down in both directions. Needless to say, NOTHING got done on the bar today.

I did manage to swing north and pick up supplies for next week’s trip to New Mexico – still need to pick and pack the wine I’m taking down with me. That will take care of everybody but my bro and sis-in-law who are headed to Australia for a month so that’s a January shipment.

Swanda and Damon coming to dinner tonight for some ribeye steaks that I found at 50% off of their on-sale. Add some asparagus, a big salad, and my final supper on US soil was a good one.

At the end of the evening, this is what I’d accomplished:

Yep, that’s all I’ve packed for Hong Kong and Macau.

Another Day, Another Run.

A pretty decent day at the shop – even with people just swinging in to pick up their wine club shipments. Makes up for the just OK day yesterday.

Headed home for a steak and salad dinner… and another run through the still.

You might (or not) ask how I know when to turn the still off. The answer is testing for alcohol content, which I cap at 90 proof (45% alcohol by volume). How do I know when it drops to that:

A graduated cylinder and alcohol proof gauge.

That’s the last of the feed stock – though I heard a rumor that five more cases may be available – not that I have any place to put them – this last run I had to bottle as “white dog”, aka unaged shine.

The results of the last week. The jars aging (out of jars, out of space, though that’s easier to manage):

And the White Dog.

Finally – there is room under my dining table, which is where all the cases of wine had been stored – if I stored them in the garage it would take longer to distill since I’d have to bring them up from 40 degree rather than the 70 degrees the house is set for. No Jimmy Carter sweaters for me (68 degrees).

Time to move back to the rolling bar project.

Work & Dinner With Roxy.

Standard day at the office (aka wine shop)—today we were tasting (1) Champagne (1) White from the Loire, and (3) Bordeaux. Didn’t sell as many as we’d hoped, maybe it was because lots of people were picking up their wine club shipments.

Was going to pick up Roxy on the way home, but a quick call diverted me downtown to pick him up at 3rd and Pike.

Salmon stuff with lobster and crab is tonight’s entrée – with a large salad as well. And the bread – Roxy loves his bread (or should I say, “my bread”):

When all that was done and we started another run through the still – the second to the last as I will be out of “feed stock” soon.

Meanwhile, progress on the new rolling bar has come to a halt:

It’s getting there but is going to need many more hours, which I don’t seem to have.

Sigh.

Chore Day.

In addition to starting on the new bar base – which required a complete redesign, it’s time to multi-task and put up some supplies for the long winter ahead.

Soldiers lines up to give their lives for Lord Bacchus:

Getting ready to can:

And the end product, complete with what the feed stock was:

Now it goes on the shelf for a couple of weeks before bottling.

And while doing two runs, I’m out in the garage working on the bar base. These are the wooden wine boxes that I’ll be using:

I think I’ll even have enough boxes left over to make a 9 drawer dresser for the bedroom! That would relieve some of the pressure on the closets, but it’s going to take another day to finish the bar, let alone the dresser. Guess I know what I’m doing on Monday.

Work & Play On Turkey Day.

Worked the shop today from 11-3pm… for those last minute wine emergencies. Did a standard Sunday’s worth of sales.

Then it was off to MoonSong’s for a Turkey Day Dinner with Bunny and Nicolas.

Can you say deep fried turkey?

Do not do this on a wooden deck – least you burn the house down.

The table is set:

Now we just need some people:

And what a menu:

  • Broiled Bay Scallops
  • Mushroom Duxelles in Phylo
  • Crudités
  • Deep-fried Turkey
  • Braised Brussell sprouts
  • Mashed Patatoes & Gravy
  • Sage Dressing
  • Cranberry Relish
  • Vanilla Cheesecake with Pecan Topping

Yum. Here is a shot of the Scallops and Duxelles…

Double Yum.

All I had to do was supply the wine:

  • Apple/Pear/Quince cider before
  • Provence rosé with the scallops and duxcelles
  • Cote du Rhone with the turkey
  • Vintage port with the dessert

I was actually home a little after eight. Thanks boys for the great meal.

Crossing I’s, Dotting T’s.

I’ve got all these plans… and none of the paperwork printed out. And speaking of papers, I updated the Wall Street Journal suspend/resume list for my newspaper… looks like I’m travelling a bit:

All those orange boxes are times I’m away between now and March.

Got all the confirmations printed out for:

  • United SEA-SFO-HKG-SFO-SEA
  • Hotel Presidenté in Macau
  • United SEA-SAF
  • Amtrak ABQ-LAX-SEA
  • Amtrak SEA-LAX
  • Alaska Air LAX-SEA
  • Alaska SEA-OAK-SEA
  • Alaska SEA-LAX-SEA
  • Princess Cruises LAX-Ensenada-LAX
  • Alaska SEA-OAK-SEA
  • Alaska SEA-OAK-SEA
  • United SEA-IAD-MUC-IST-MUC-IAH-SEA

Whew!

Finished the top renovation on the living room bar. Still need half a dozen pint glasses:

And my plan for a new bottom with lots of storage for wine and booze has had to undergo a major design change – from two wooden wine boxes for wine storage and two open topped for booze storage – it’s now going to be three across (from two, meaning it will be a full base for the bar) with two open bins for booze storage, and five for wine and other storage… and will probably take twice as long to build. And the soonest I can work on it will be Friday since I worked from 4-7 tonight and tomorrow I’ll be working from 11-3 and then it’s off to MoonSong’s for a deep fried bird.

The day at the shop was….

Tuesday Off.

Tuesday off, but no laying around eating BonBons. Time to redo the living room bar for the fall/winter drinking season – I mean entertaining season.

The plan is to create a two by two cube of French wooden wine boxes with top access to the top two for the bottles of liquor, then on the bottom two drawers (well, the top will be drawers as well) to hold a couple of cases of wine since under the TV there isn’t a heat vent.

Got the plans sketched out:

And the cutting diagram drawn:

Off to Home Depot for supplies:

  • 4x4x½” sanded one side plywood
  • fender washers
  • ¼” threaded rod
  • ¼” nuts
  • ¼” washers
  • rubber rod tips
  • swivel casters

And then to Builders Supply for drawer slides.

Here is a shot of the top renovation with the first set of glass hangers in:

The major point behind this is to keep me from having to wash the martini glasses as they fill up with dust. And now 90% complete – I discovered I could get another couple of racks of glasses hung, but didn’t have enough of all the pieces:

And that’s how I spent my day off. Tomorrow before work I’ll start on making the lower cabinet after I finish up the top.

First Monday Open For The Year.

12-7 today – that’s my wine shop schedule for today – with the first couple of hours spent with Jim working on the monthly wine club shipments. The wine club keeps growing every month – which is what you want. Not a bag day at the shop – not as good as Sunday, but over where I’m happy for a Sunday to be. We will be open the Mondays of Thanksgiving (today), Christmas and Thanksgiving.

Came home and popped this into the pan – well, the steak, not the salad.

Just a quiet evening around the house – chillin’ and watchin’ the boob tube.
