Late Sundays Have Been Hard For Me The Last Nine Months.

This post will be in reverse order… late evening to morning.

Or maybe I should say mourning.

After the Sunday 11pm news on CBS they repeat the Sunday morning political talk show – something that my buddy CaddyDaddy would watch it in real time even when we were travelling – he was the guy who got up in the morning, made the coffee, took his walk, and watched the political pundits WAY before I got up.

I miss him. I’m angry that he died weeks before he would have been able to put $500 a month away in the “travel kitty”. I’m angry when I’m planning trips I know he would have wanted to be a part of. I’m angry because he deserved better. And I miss him.

Sigh.

Hard to do a day wrap-up after that.

Breakfast with the kids (Julian/Megan) – scrambled eggs with bacon, green onions, goat cheese and salsa. Not a bad way to start the morning.

I left for work early as I realized that I’d left the signs out for the Saturday Tasting, and it’s now Sunday morning… oops.

A good Sunday when we break into the four digits and sell all but one bottle of one of the tasting wines – hell, one customer bought six, though I have to say that a decent $15 Oregon Pinot almost sells itself.

Begged for a dinner invitation to DB/BM (check earlier posts for the key). Homemade chicken pot pie (with salad in my honor) after a quick trip to Safeway for last minute things.

STUNNING meal, probably not the best for me carb wise, but….

WP_20131124_008[1]

Got to work the morning. Just going home to clean up some more of my mess.

Another Long Day.

Thanks goodness I close the shop today (1:30-7pm). Downside – I have company coming to spend the night.

At the tail end of the ship day Julian (nephewish) and Megan (nephewish girlfriend) dropped by before their overnight visit to “Chez Uncle Marquez”. The “convoy” home needed some more “pre instruction) about following distances and keeping up – and I was doing the speed limit OR LESS. I abandoned them in Georgetown knowing they had GPS and they were only a couple of minutes behind me arriving at the house.

Dinner:

  • Jerked chunks of lamb
  • Salad with yellow cherry tomatoes, green onions, romaine
  • Cocktails before, good wine with, cocktails after

Life is good, and then we started up the still… while Julian slept (I was a nice guy for once and didn’t take a picture of him curled up with a pillow on the purple chair).

Oops, I did:

He will do GREAT in economy-minus class on United. Not to be confused with economy-plus. Mine while Megan and I were working the still…

Look at the level at the bottle of the catch bucket – we are close!

Got to work the morning – left the kitchen a mess.

Long Day, Part Two.

Arrive back in Bellingham around 8am – and immediately headed to the Jack In The Box for a meaty burrito – a six hour flight with just a cheese and fruit plate and a lot of scotch leaves one a bit hungry.

And I don’t know what made me think of this – but during the awake time of my redeye flight this stumbled into my alcohol laced brain:

Pointing at a cute guy’s crotch in a bar and uttering “When’s the last time you took that dog out for some exercise.”

Slept for the last couple of hours on the plane and then after the burrito pulled off at the first rest area and grabbed another couple of hours of sleep before my lunch date with SeasideBoy up in Blaine.

The sleep helped.

It was good to see him, too bad there isn’t any time to fool around:

Had lunch at Big Al’s Diner before I took him back to his boyfriend and maybe soon to be husband – he had me save the 1st of October for a possible wedding. Hopefully this one will work out better than the one last year that never happened.

Then it was the two hour plus drive home with the usual messy Friday afternoon traffic.

A quick nap and it was cocktail time… again.

Dinner was some boneless country style pork ribs in Arthur Bryant’s BBQ sauce with a nice little salad.

[210.8] But that was late afternoon, which bodes well for the morning weigh-in.

Going To Be A Long Day.

Up at 5:30 – tour bus leaves at 8:30 and I’d like some food in my belly.

I was at the pickup point at 8:30 – and it was more like 8:45 when they showed up… first stop was Wiamea Falls, which I’d been to the lower free portions several times over the years, but admission was included so up to the falls go I. I will admit to paying the $6 for the roundtrip golf cart ride – it’s going to be a LONG day of walking, best not to blow my knee out at the beginning of the day:

Lots of pretty flora and fauna:

Stopped at the same stand that Darcie, Jean and I stopped at last fall on our way to the North Shore – this time I actually got one of these deep fried treats:

So this tour is the Ultimate Circle Island Oahu Eco-Adventure Tour:

Lots of pretty beaches around the island:

The Japanese Byodo-In Temple:

And it’s river of fish:

And from our last stop of the day – Hama Bay, an impromptu group shot minus myself and another one or two. We were pretty bushed by this time of the day:

Back to the hotel drop point at a little after 6pm – the second stop which was nice concidering I was the last stop on the way out. Went next door to Vits Hawaiian Steakhouse for a quick bit before the airport shuttle picks me up at 7:30. Had the Kaula Pork on a Taro Bun – maybe the BEST Kaula pork I’ve ever had – and the slaw was good too!

Why, yes, that would be a Manhattan in the background – though the bartender had to look up the recipe – I like both the cherry AND the lemon twist.

Honolulu Airport now has the TSA-Pre expedited security which met a fast an easy passage into the secure area and on to the Delta Sky Club lounge for two and a half hours of catching up on email, blog posts, wine shop posts and whiskey drinking.

Plane took off a little late – after midnight, but I’m headed back to Bellingham.

Hawaii Day Three.

Yet another Portuguese and String Cheese omelet out of the Microsoft with morning, along with the good Cuban-style coffee I packed. I could get used to this (and just as well as it’s the same breakfast tomorrow).

Ran a quick errand to Whalers General Store for another bottle of Bourbon – apparently between the “company” last night and again tonight we have managed to drain the bottle – and a couple of summer rolls (shrimp, rice noodles, lettuce in a wonton wrapper with dipping sauce – not fried).

I had a 1pm “Wyndham” presentation at 1, which meant the lobby by 12:45, but they called at 12:15 saying the shuttle was here if I wanted to go early…. I went down to the lobby and the shuttle had left without me. Said they’d be right back… not. I finally went back to the room and had a third of the summer rolls so I’d survive the presentation.

So – I finally get to the Outrigger Waikiki where this damn presentation is… to find out its 90 minutes not 60 which is cutting it close for Johnnie picking me up at 3 for a run to Diamond Head to see his couple of houses that he is moving out of.

Initial presentation was actually one of the better one – they knew I wasn’t buying and it was more an exchange of information comparing the various Wyndham programs (theirs and WorldMark, both Wyndham corporate owned). Finished that and then the “shark” – a woman – tried another pitch before letting me out the door. When they said “sign here for your $125 AMEX card”, I signed – even though they had already paid $125 of the $125.96 for an island circle tour I booked for tomorrow. So – for my 90 minutes (which wasn’t explained to me the length) I got $250. Much better deal. Apparently they don’t know how to deal with pre-paid stuff.

On the way back after taking a coupon for a free Hawaiian music at the upstairs Waikiki Beach Walk merchants (ended up buying a $12 locally screened bandana feeling rich after my AMEX card) I stumbled across this lovely:

Pineapple people. Odd. Got back to the room with enough time to wolf down the remaining 2/3rds of the Summer Roll (with dipping sauce) and a cocktail before I got text from Johnnie that he was downstairs.

Off to Diamond Head to see where the brood (him, wife, children, extended family – 10 in all) have been living. One house for the main family, one for the extended family. Really what I wanted to see was “Cruella”, his Johnson Motors factory Camaro rework:

The thing is over 25 feet long… think 4 Dalmatians instead of 101.

Then we were off for a walk to the beach… which all beaches are public in Hawaii… and I have another Hawaii 5 0 moment. This house has been featured repeatedly on the show:

Millions of dollars’ worth of house, and anybody can party between the house and the water…

Johnnie took me out to a lovely dinner at Roys (must review for TripAdvisor) after the tours (and me grabbing a paper cutter, some unopened dill seed and some unopened food coloring) – he really wanted me to try the Butter Fish … which at $42 for the entrée I was happy for him to be picking up the tab:

Sorry that the picture is just of the Manhattan and Johnnie rather than the Butter Fish. I’ve known Johnnie since my college days. What a long strange trip it’s been.

And the final picture of the day was taken when RussianOrphan/WaikikiBoy came back to spend some more time – and I got him to sort of smile:

Please ignore the red-eye which makes him look like Satan. We also spent some time working on his January trip to Vegas for a half work/half play trip. He gets two days off with pay, but has to foot the bill.

Speaking of which — any preference on his online nickname? I’m conflicted:

Big Day In Honolulu.

Might as well just do my day in pictures… pretty flowers waiting for the shuttle to Hilo Hatties:

Hilo Hatties is the first stop – walk through the store to look for nonexistent bargains (well, I did find the hot pink 50th Anniversary shopping bag for $1.99), then walk over to the Salvation Army (three Tommy Bahama Silk Hawaiian Shirts and a Mount Gay Regatta Baseball cap since I forgot a hat this trip – all for $27.00 since Tuesday was Senior Day and they thought I was a senior) and then onto Kmart, just across the street (stickers for me and SeasideBoy, and an 8-pack of Coke Zero for the fridge).

Changes have come to that little neighborhood – Sam Choys (the place I used to go for seafood and manhattans) has closed down. Seems I missed it by about six months: http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/news/2013/03/06/sam-choys-breakfast-lunch-crab.html

Back at Hilo Hatties after my walkabout I grabbed a shrimp plate from Big T’s Shrimp Truck – of Hawaii 5 0 fame:

And would you believe that he was there in person!

And I even got a picture with him!

A really great shuttle (the free Hilo Hatties shuttle) driver this time – he even stopped for a few minutes by the Aloha tower to show us some coral with lots of fishies swimming around – it didn’t hurt that he threw a handful of bread crumbs in:

Then it was back to the Royal Garden – here is a shot from my lanai (a fancy Hawaiian word for balcony):

The one toward the ocean didn’t turn out so well.

Next up was a light (sort of) dinner at Choco House which is only open for dinner – and I swear that I was the only white person in the place – everyone was chattering away in Japanese. My sushi platter – yes, there was rice (and miso soup):

Not bad for $17.00 (plus tip). Reminds me that I’m two cities behind on my Trip Advisor restaurant reviews. Maybe tomorrow before the “presentation” I signed up for in exchange for $125 which I’m using to finance my Eco Around The Island Tour With Lunch for Thursday.

Needed a light dinner since I have a date tonight…

He is much sweeter than he looks in this picture where he looks like a tough biker. Wasn’t an overnight date as he works to 11-7am shift.

I’m hoping for a repeat tomorrow night.

Hello Honolulu.

Got the upgrade. Got my favorite seat – let’s pray for the return trip as well.

Out of the house at 10:30 which means plenty of time… which usually means I won’t need the time, traffic will be fine and I’ll find a close in parking space in front of the airport at only $10 a day.

With the early arrival it means that I can hang out in Scotty Brown’s Social Club which is actually a really good restaurant in the gate area. It’s a small mostly Canadian (7 locations or so) and soon to be 3 US locations (two in Bellingham) with the addition of a Bellevue branch. I had the one (freaking huge) piece Halibut Fish and Chips (extra tartar .50 but worth it) – and they make a great Manhattan (in the background) using the well bourbon Evan Williams (my go-to none special occasion bourbon). Looks tasty – and other than the sunflower seeds in the slaw, it was great.

]

Plane left on time, but with headwinds we were a few minutes getting in. And then it was getting my luggage (second bag off – amazing) and finding the Speedi-Shuttle stand, which was mobbed. Got to the hotel a little before 10pm and then set off on errands once I hit the room.

Was looking for eggs, soda, and bourbon. Found the last two at the first try, the closest ABC store along with a snack – once my blood-sugar had calmed down from the snack and a cocktail it was off to a larger ABC store (also checked out the Whalers which seems to be a buck or so cheaper on the booze) and got 8 eggs – yes, an 8-pack, along with a Portuguese salami and some string cheese for morning omelets.

The room isn’t bad… a little kitchenette, no stove or burners:

It seems like I’m in a handicapped unit – which is what I think I had the last time staying here… but it’s comfortable and the bathroom is huge (to accommodate a wheelchair):

And the main room.

Off to explore in the morning.

Tasting/Art Reception/Packing.

Well, the post heading tells my day.

Good crowds at the tasting which makes up for the $171 in sales from 11-3 before the artist reception. Suzanne (Jimmie’s girlfriend) put on quite the spread for her winter opening – Bajin Spiced Spiral-cut Ham, salmon dips, onion dip, cheese platter, chips, cookies, sliced apples…. And luckily there were the crowds to put a big dent in it.

Here is one of the pieces hanging – though I think this one is already sold:

These are studies from her upcoming Spring 2015 release of a technical manual on painting landscapes. Here is a blurb from my blog a couple of years ago about her book on portrait painting that continues to sell well:

And we already have our first artist show hanging (art won over wine maps in the on-line poll). The featured artist is Suzanne Brooker, artist, teacher, and author of the successful art instruction book, Portrait Painting Atelier: Old Master Techniques and Contemporary Applications.

As the artist reception usually do – it ran late. There are worse things in life. Got home about 6 rather than the usual 5:30. On tonight’s menu is steak and salad – and the steak is almost as big as my head – no room on the plate for salad:

Luckily there was the remnants of last night’s salad – which surprisingly the boys didn’t finish – I blame that on the two loaves of bread that I baked:

Didn’t get all the way packed, but close. Question is “will this be the trip that I rely completely on the tablet?”

Heat Is Back On.

Slept under MANY blankets last night and got up early to wait for the gas man… not 8 but 9 is when he showed up. At least I had hot water in time for a shower before work.

Worked the shop from 11-4:30 or so, then it was off to Young’s Market (wholesale wine distributor) to check the price on Eroica Resiling for one of our customers – only to miss their hours by 40 minutes.

Guess I’ll email them.

Back home to start working on the bread for tonight’s salmon dinner with Brandon & Roxy. Actually made two loafs since Roxy is a carb-hound:

  • Rosemary Challah
  • Green/Black Olive Challah (first time for this recipe)

Great meal – opened a Delmas Blanquette de Limoux (French Bubbles) which is main from 80% Mauzac and 20% Chardonnay

The Blanquette de Limoux is made from Mauzac, a traditional variety that gives body and aroma, with Chardonnay that reinforces the bouquet and adds freshness and finesse. The Delmas is a creamy-textured, full-bodied wine with a fine yeasty character, subtly fruity, with toasty green apple and lemon flavors. It’s great for effervescing any party or dinner.

Then it was back to cocktails. Probably too many cocktails.

Here is a shot of the boys from their last visit that I haven’t posted before:

Just imagine Brandon’s hair sort of pink and blue these days.

They spent the night rather than taking the bus home… probably just as well that NONE of us were out roaming around tonight.

Up In The Air Again.

Dan was off to work so it was just Lisa and I running around town doing some errands.

First stop was a thrift shop to look for an urn/vase for their recently deceased dog’s ashes. Scored a Japanesey/Chinesey one – but the most humorous thing happened in the men’s section with these young lads:

Two men, one pair of jeans.

Headed to the airport at 2:30 so I could have an early dinner at Elways in the B Concourse:

That would be the steak tacos – yes, I know – there are carbs in the bowl to the left.

Uneventful flights other than the mile walk between United gates in SFO since I came in at one end and went out through the end of the international terminal.

Got back to the house at 2am – same flight as last week coming back from New Orleans. Got back to find this:

There had been a neighborhood gas problem (no, not from all the Mexican restaurants serving beans) that required the gas company to turn off everyones gas. Nothing like calling the gas company at 2:30 in the morning to schedule an early Saturday restart. I’ve have done it myself but they locked out my meter.

A chilly night praying for hot water in the morning for a shower.

Colorado, Day Two.

Another sunny day with the top down (Dan also has a Miata)…

…though the weather forecast is for snow on Sunday – good thing I’m leaving tomorrow.

Got a bunch of work done for the shop this afternoon – made this great calendar of our holiday hours:

And got the site updated with the latest tasting notes.

Dinner tonight was Braised Short Ribs from the food network: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/anne-burrell/braised-short-ribs-recipe/index.html

Falling off the bone tender. Damn tasty. And some greens on the side rather than the mashed potatoes shown here:

Guess I’d better start getting ready for my return home tomorrow.

Denver (Broomfield) Day One.

Lazy days sleeping in. Kept looking at my watch and not realizing I was still on West Coast time, not Mountain time.

Errands today:

  • Home Depot for yet another set of parts for the suitcase – and a DepotDog with a WAY too chatty owner
  • Total Beverage for two 1.75s of Evan Williams Black ($20.95)
  • King Sooper for eggs, Diet Coke, Diet Verners, and anything else that looked good on the mark-down racks (bread, cheese, bacon)

Quiet day around the house working on the computer, reading, cooking… isn’t that what a holiday should be?

Steaks and greens for dinner—and some of the bread along with this great olive oil that we sell in the shop and a lovely bottle of the 2007 Bonny Boon le Cigare Volante (the flying cigar).

After dinner it was to the couches for some Wii Couch Bowling – it’s like the Wii Bed Bowling from Cabo San Lucas in September, but from the couch. Basically you flip the WiiMote over and bowl overhand – something that I would not suggest at your local Bowling Alley.

Today’s Uncle Markie picture features Winston, who is slowly calming down and warming up to me.

At least he isn’t barking in this shot.

Headed To Denver

Luckily there is a little more time in the day to finish packing the computer bag – the big one – for Denver. Taking the big wheeled one since the notebook still isn’t configured enough for being the sole device for the three nights I’m gone.

Today’s humor shot is from the Alaska Board Room and the whiskey they serve. McCormicks – originally distilled in Weston, MO and I remember going on distillery tours and picnicking on the grounds as a kid:

First stop on the trip is SFO (San Francisco International Airport) and with the flight running half an hour early there is time for a sit down lunch, albeit a little rushed. The Yankee Pier was calling me for chowder and oysters… and a Manhattan, which the waiter originally said, we only have New England. Manhattan – the whiskey drink, not Manhattan, a style of chowder:

Then it was off to the gate – passing a great display on Japanese cartoon characters:

SFO is has had some really great exhibits in the United Terminal – I remember one of Taxi memorabilia that I enjoyed years ago.

No upgrade on the flight to Denver (unlike my rare upgrade on the way to SFO) – I was number 32 on the list.

Got into Denver on time with Dan picking me up – and the damn wheel fell off again – time for another trip to Home Depot!

Good to see the two of them again.

Work Day.

Work Day – but not in the traditional sense, more in the doing lots of stuff related to the shop that doesn’t pay an hourly rate. The “got it done” list for today:

  • Built two more rolling racks
  • Cut all the wood for empty 6-pack box storage in the hallway of the wine shop
  • Got the shelves installed (but not painted – think January for that once two of the pieces dry out [they came from a scrap of wood that was outside])
  • Got the filing cabinet moved out of the back room meaning four cases of wine can be stored in the same space
  • Got the new rolling racks stocked
  • Loaded up all the big recycling (flattened boxes)

All this an prepping for dinner with BreticusMaximus [BM] and DancingBear [DB] – this time at my place, this time a bacon wrapped pork loin:

BM made rice (he’s Hawaiian – it comes out naturally better) and DB made pan gravy, something I have NO talent at all making.

And our final shot of the day is DB holding the two “wine” bottles for their upcoming cruise – one has Bombay Sapphire Gin, one has Maker’s Mark Bourbon. Some day the cruise lines will catch on, but until then, “party on”:

I wish my cell phone had image stabilization. Sigh.

Semi-Sunny Sunday.

Overcast but not raining—better than raining, but still gloomy. Luckily I’m working the shop all day so it matters not.

Decent day at the shop, not really much time to fool around with non-work stuff as people were coming and going – which is a good thing.

The original dinner plan for tonight was to have DancingBear [DB] and BreticusMaximus [BM] over for a pork loin dinner (with salad, rice [for the boys], wine, etc.) – but that got changed when DB started working on a huge pot of braised beef stew. With the Alaska Way Viaduct closed for whatever, it seemed easier to change plans and have me come north.

Off at 5, to Safeway for some artisan bread (for the boys), and I was at their door at 5:45, not bad.

Great dinner, and early enough that I was home early as well.

And for today’s picture – Uncle Markie annoyed?

Not sure was I was annoyed by – maybe it was the 64gig SD card that stopped working days before I’m headedto Denver.

The Answer Is Five Pounds.

The question is: How much weight did you gain in New Orleans.

Not hard to do when you are on the road and can’t really maintain your low-carb lifestyle. Back to the grind of protein and salads.

Lots of packages waiting for me at the shop:

  • Alli (anti-fat absorption pills)
  • My warranty repaired Lenovo tablet
  • My Pyle Bluetooth speaker
  • The pattern for Lederhosen

Who knew that Lederhosen patterns START at waist size 40!

And who knew you could get long legged lederhosen? It will be a perfect use for that Zebra skin that I have in the garage.

Wild day at the shop – NEVER have we had a tasting sell all but three bottles of the five cases we brought in. Kinda makes up for a crappy Thursday in sales, which might have set a record in the other direction.

Home by 7:30 for a quite steak and salad dinner – yep, back to the routine.

Of Museums And Flights.

I found out that there is a difference between the WorldMark units and the Wyndham units at the Avenue Plaza beside the resort guide they put in the room. The Wyndham units you have to check out by 10am, and the WorldMark units by noon – not that it makes much difference since the Colonels have to check out at 10am and are heading over to pick me up.

But first another run to Igors for t-shirts. Kate wants another one in Large for the other daughter… and what the hell, I picked up one for myself as well. Sorry for the fuzzy shot.

To kill the time before my flight, and the Colonels need to get to Pensacola we are headed to the National World War Two Museum. Man that thing is big.

This is just ONE of the four buildings. Talk about an endowment.

Learned lots of new and interesting stuff – watched all of the 5-10 minute video reels mostly because it was a chance to get off me feet for a bit.

Several hours later we were all tired and hungry and headed to the snack bar for hot dogs – not going to be a low-carb day for me I can see. Then it was off to another of the buildings, this one sponsored by Boeing which looks like an overgrown boy’s bedroom with full-scale airplanes hanging from the ceiling:

I like the fact that you had several catwalks to get a view from – and a warning that if you have vertigo or are afraid of heights – DO NOT go to the 3rd and 4th floors where the catwalks are. I don’t, but it was still a little disconcerting.

Then it was time to run me to the airport (thanks, Colonels) and for them to head to Pensacola. Got to the Louis B. Armstrong International Airport 3 hours ahead of my flight… which is just fine. Time for another hot dog to tide me over until my dinner flight to San Francisco at 6:50pm

I can already say that I LOVE the new airline rules of allowing your small electronic devices to remain on gate-to-gate that just went into effect on United (and Alaska as well). It’s really nice to be able to have your noise-cancelling headphones powered up for the noisiest part of the flight. Can’t wait until my tablet comes back from the shop (should have been delivered today to the shop.)

Another couple of hours at SFO – meaning another snack – this time Mongolian beef from the Chinese place. No rice. Back to the diet – I can only imagine what tomorrow’s weigh-in will be like after five days in NOLA.

The SFO-SEA plane was one of United’s new “Sky Interior” 737s – slick. Love the lighting. Makes me wonder if they will retrofit their older 737s.

Didn’t get home until two in the morning. Didn’t get to bed until 3 winding down from all the travel excitement.

Easy Day In The Big Easy.

Well, the Señor Colonel took an “administrative day” today – meaning no tourist activities – just hanging out in their timeshare in his jammies.

While not doing a ton of stuff I did check out NOLA’s newest Streetcar line that goes up Canal to Tulane and onto the Amtrak/Greyhound station. Reports from the Colonels were that when they were there years ago it was a bit tatty. Not so today:

Built in 1954, I have no idea when it was remodeled.

Nice murals on the walls. And nice that Greyhound is integrated into the station which also has a bus stop and the streetcar stop. Wish Seattle would to that.

Had lunch at VooDoo BBQ on St. Charles – it wasn’t as good as I remember, but you have to love a place that has $3 Grey Goose Vodka drinks all day at the bar. Yes, I had a Martini (though my mother would say that there is no such thing as a Vodka Martini.

For our final NOLA dinner we are headed to Huck Finns which is on the same block as the Colonels timeshare:

And yes, I did have the Honey Island Gator Platter which in addition to the battered and deep-fried gator bits also had an amazing gator sausage. Yum. As usual, too much food.

And a tattoo on our VERY tattooed waitress:

Apparently lots of her male relatives worked for CocaCola.

Headed back to my timeshare for a quiet evening of TV and packing.

On an early evening flight home tomorrow.

Bayou Day, Then A Repeat For Dinner.

Off to Bayou Country we go at 10:30… being led astray my Señor Garmin who doesn’t think that the freeways are a good choice.

Here is where we are headed:

We made it to Laura, then Oak Alley, then Houmas – at least we got into the grounds of Houmas since a gate was open – well, at least the grounds. At $20 a pop per person… beauty from afar is fine:

The main houses (above), and where “the help” lives”:

Those are about three dorms deep… and I’m guessing they are painted much better than when they were slave quarters.

And we have Kate and Waylen at one of the three plantations we visited. And now our lunch spot where I had the seafood gumbo and the alligator appetizer:

Yes, a former slave dormitory now connected to a former general store.

Got the Colonels to swing by what I was hoping was a massive liquor mart… cheaper than the mini-mart next to the condo, but not that cheap – all this for a 30 minute detour on the way home.

We were all bushed – the Colonels headed back to the French Quarter after dropping me off – we’ll have a farewell dinner tomorrow.

Me, it was raining when it was dinner time. Looked at the Mr. Johns Steak House menu in the lobby – it’s just off the condo. A little stuffy, and if I’m going to pay that much money for the salad I want I might as well get a jazz trio at Houstons as part of the bill. And it’s raining out, so Voodoo BBQ is too far to walk in the rain, and too long to wait for the street car.

I went for the Seared Ahi Tuna salad, needing my greens… and I ended up with:

  1. The Sazerac

Just FYI, Herbsaint is a Absinthe like thingee: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbsaint. And it’s either 90 or 100 proof so we can’t carry it at theshop. DAMN.

  1. The French Dip

The above should be entitled French Dip With Sazerac. Damn, more carbs – but it was a house made egg roll that was stunning. As was the medium rare roast beef in the middle – and the ramekin of creamy horseradish. Best $20 French Dip I’ve ever had (OK – I’ve never paid $20 for a French Dip). This is the same dish I saw sitting at the bar on Monday that the guy next to me was eating.

I finished my evening in my bath robe while taking care of this – thanks Kate for reminding me that I might as well go home with clean clothes:

Entitled: Clean Clothes With Cocktail.

Night all.

Dive Bar Tuesday.

The main cultural item for today in the Louisiana State Museum, a 2-floor museum next to the St. Louis Cathedral across from Jackson Square. The bottom floor is devoted primarily to Katrina (the Tropical Storm you might remember) including items such as Fats Waller’s flood damaged grand piano:

The upstairs of the museum is devoted to Mardi Gras – with separate sections about the krewe associations (social clubs), the various balls, the regal finery etc. Here is an example of subtle outfit on display:

Oddly enough my most amusing shot is of the bathroom door on the Marti Gras floor:

Done up to look like a porta-pottie.

After the museum is was off to lunch at a place I can’t remember the name of already. Then I needed to get back to the condo for a meeting to answer some timeshare questions I had – and walking towards the streetcar there was this little brass band out busking:

I met back up with the Colonels for dinner a Igors Bar/Grill/Gameroom/Lending Library/Laundromat a couple of doors down. As promised, a better shot of the sign:

And a shot of the Colonels:

Good burgers – think we hit the end of happy hour so my well Manhattan (which had a lovely diesel nose to it) was $3.00. The burgers were made to order as were the fries – by the bartender. I’m guessing he has help on the weekends. Not bad for a dive bar being visited by a trio of old white people.

They headed back to their timeshare and me back to mine.

Off to the bayou tomorrow.
